Delhi’s demographics

Delhi’s as of 2023 population is estimated at a whooping 32,941,309. In 1950, the population of Delhi was 1,369,369. Delhi has grown by 875,549 in the last year, which represents a 2.73% annual change. It is also the fifth most populous city in the world and the largest city in India area-wise. It covers an area exceeding 1,000 square kilometres and has one of the highest population densities in the world as well. The largest Ethnic group is Indo-Aryan, estimated at a 72 percent. Delhi struggles with its rapid growth and is facing substantial pressure to improve commercial and residential infrastructure, both in urban and rural areas.

Delhi is counted amongst one of the affordable places to live in, in India. It offers excellent infrastructure, however, the cost of living may vary as per the area one wishes to live in. For example living in South Delhi may be more expensive. A lot also depends on your lifestyle, where you live, the size of your family, your daily expenses and the like. It is important to factor in that it is a city filled with college students, working professionals, and factors such as food and transport also add to the cost of living. Several sources have confirmed this to be around 15000 to 25000 rupees per month.

More than 60% of households in Delhi are one- or two-room BHK’S, as per the Delhi economic survey conducted in 2021. The survey also highlighted that about one-third of Delhi’s population lives in substandard housing, which includes 675 slums, 1,797 unauthorised colonies and old dilapidated areas, and also 362 villages. These areas often lack safe adequate housing and basic services.
